Biltmore Forest: An Asheville Historic District

A Secluded Woodland Retreat—Minutes from Downtown

Biltmore Forest, once a part of the Biltmore Estate, features mountain views, carefully maintained forest, and romantic homes—all just a short drive from everything you love about Asheville.

Chartered in 1923, this intimate historic district is one of the most desirable areas for luxury buyers in North Carolina, home to a number of celebrities and prestigious community members over the years.

Two community parks, the Biltmore Forest Country Club, and sweeping mountain sunsets from the Blue Ridge Parkway set the scene for Biltmore Forest's old-fashioned brand of luxury living.

What Sets Biltmore Forest Apart

When you drive through Biltmore Forest, you know you're someplace special. This small community within Asheville takes you back to days gone by, from its grand homes and dedicated police and fire departments to an old-fashioned social club.

Biltmore Forest Country Club

The Biltmore Forest Country Club serves as the social center of the community, featuring a 135-acre Donald J. Ross golf course. It is short but challenging, with delightful rolling hills, a stream, and the “greatest Par-four on the PGA tour,” according to professional golfer Ben Hogan, who won the Land of Sky Open at Biltmore Forest in 1940 and 1942.

The social and golf club itself offers an old-fashioned experience with a flavor of the Gilded Age. Whether or not members are seasoned golfers, it's the perfect place to have a drink with friends, play cards, or enjoy a nice dinner. Its facilities house formal and casual dining, a pro shop, fitness center, pool, tennis courts, and bedrooms.

“There’s definitely a throwback atmosphere, like  ‘Let’s put on a suit and go to the club and have dinner.’”

History

In 1916, a catastrophic flood in Asheville damaged the Biltmore Estate, necessitating its repair. To reduce tax liability and cover renovation costs, 1,500 acres were sold to make residential lots. This was formally chartered as the town of Biltmore Forest in 1923 and became a historic preservation district in 1990.

The small community of 1,343 features unique, stately properties in a range of styles, such as French Norman, English Manor, and Tudor, including those designed by architects William Waldo Dodge, Erle Stillwell, and Henry Irven Gaines.

“Biltmore Forest is a primary residential community. It's one of the oldest neighborhoods in Asheville and backs up to the Biltmore Estate. It's a 100-year-old club just soaked in tradition; you still wear a sports coat to dinner. It's close to town. It's close to the hospital. It's got its own sort of Biltmore Village right outside of it.”

Parks

Rosebank and Greenwood parks offer green spaces and playgrounds for children, as well as benches where residents can take a moment to relax and enjoy nature without venturing far from home. Additionally, nature lovers will appreciate the community's proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, just 1.5 miles away.
